Solar Photovoltaic FAQs

What is the feed-in-tariff?
The government launched the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) in April 2010 to encourage home owners to produce their own electricity, the incentive being that you will earn money for every kilowatt hour of energy your solar PV panels produce, this is paid direct to you by your FIT supplier on a quarterly basis for 25 years.  In addition to this you will also be paid for the energy you don't use yourself and feed back into the National grid.

How much will my PV system generate?
What you produce will depend on many different factors such as roof orientation, any shading issues and where in the UK you live. Depending on the system size you can produce somewhere in the region of 1500 – 3600 Kw/hr. On average you will use 50% of the electrical energy you generate. This is based on an unshaded, south facing roof in the south of England.

On average how much will a system cost?
The cost usually depends on different factors (whether you need scaffolding or not) but mainly depends on the system size, an average of £6,000-£12,000 + VAT @ 5%

How much am I expecting to be paid back?
Around £600 - £1000 annual benefit per year

What maintenance is required?
One of the advantages of solar panels is that minimal maintenance is required as they are self-cleaning. From time to time they may need to be hosed down to clean off any excess dirt, such as leaves or any heavy snow.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?
Any sunlight reaching the panels will produce solar energy you can use. As expected, summer months far exceed what you may expect to produce in the winter months, our calculations are based on a year average total.

How long will my installation take?
This depends on how big your system is. We expect it to be completed in 1-2 days for a 4kw system, with our installers taking their time to make sure your system is installed accurately.

What size system will I need?
This all depends on how much energy consumption you use. The larger your system, the quicker the payback period will be. An average size system will expect to have a payback of 10-12 years.
